Powell Jones, 87, of Marietta passed away peacefully in his home December 18, 2012. A family man and career employee of Equifax, Jones was also a World War II Navy Veteran serving in Europe, Africa and the Pacific. Powell was born May 31, 1925, in Carthage, NC, and grew up in Lake Waccamaw, where his family operated a tourist hotel. As a boy, Jones served as a hunting and fishing guide to visitors on the lake and remained a dedicated fisherman for the rest of his life. After his discharge from the Navy in 1946, Jones attended Presbyterian Junior College and graduated from High Point College. There he met and married Dorothy Winters and began his career with Equifax, which was then called the Retail Credit Company. He later transferred to the Atlanta office and settled with his family in Marietta. Jones was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Dot Jones, a long time Cobb County educator. He is survived by his two children, Jennifer Ragsdale (Steve) and Chris Jones (Natalie) of Acworth, GA, and three grandchildren, Jessica Ragsdale, Davis and Caroline Jones. Visitation will be held at HM Patterson & Son/Canton Hill Chapel in Marietta on Thursday, 5-7 p.m. The funeral service will be a private family service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to the Lake Waccamaw Depot Museum, 201 Flemington Avenue, Lake Waccamaw, NC 28450.
