Michael A. Grant, 64, died March 8th after a heroic 15-year battle with various cancers. He is survived by his wife Jeanne; son Jason Grant and his wife Jacki; daughter Colleen Robinson and her husband J.T.; daughter Sarah Amodeo and husband Alex; and three grandchildren Sofia and Kayde Grant and Aiden Amodeo. Mike was born in Montreal, Canada, graduated from the University of Illinois and married Jeanne in Chicago, Illinois in 1974. He was executive vice president of the Malon D. Mimms Company and prior to Mimms, held a number of executive positions in mortgage banking and banking organizations. In the early-80’s, Mike found Jesus Christ after reading and being influenced by John Stott’s Basic Christianity. From that point, his life was changed and characterized by a relentless, other-centered, humble and generous focus on helping people. Among numerous board appointments at The School of Music Department at Georgia State University, Growing Leaders, and the Atlanta Christian Medical and Dental Associations, Mike served on the Board of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta and was previously President of the Cobb County Boys & Girls Clubs. Recently, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta honored him at the Georgia Aquarium with the prestigious National Silver Medallion Award. Mike founded the Malon D. Mimms Oratorical Competition helping young boys and girls conquer the natural fear of public speaking and had a club named after him in Austell, GA. Mike served three terms as a deacon at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church in Marietta, Georgia and blessed many folks with his Frank Sinatra-like voice. He loved serving other people and was known for connecting and helping many folks find work. To know Mike was to laugh with and at Mike. His wonderful self-deprecating humor endeared him to thousands of people. His daughter, Colleen, two years ago, honored him with a collection of hundreds of written and typed letters of people impacted by his life and compiled them in a private book entitled “A Legacy of Influence.” He loved and honored his wife. He gave his time and love also to his children and encouraged them constantly by his presence. His children most noted how much he was “with them” and available in person – a gift they will forever cherish. Memorial Service will be held at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church in Marietta, GA on Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at noon.
