Mary "Sue" Margaret Scanlon O'Brien

Mary Margaret ("Sue") O'Brien, 81, died September 11, 2011, in Marietta, Georgia. She was the loving wife of Philip J. ("Jerry") O'Brien, to whom she was married for 59 years. She was the beloved mother of five children: Maureen O'Brien of Sanibel, FL; Harry C. O'Brien of Larkspur, CA; Timothy O'Brien of Chicago, IL; Patrick O'Brien of Westwood, MA; and Michael J. O'Brien of Marietta. She was the loving and much-loved grandmother of nine grandchildren: Devin, Kathryn, Margaret, Connor, Casey, Daniel, Joseph, Thomas, and Robert. She is also survived by her sisters Anne Rogers and Kathleen Taylor and her brother John Scanlon; and by many nieces and nephews, among other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her brothers James, Thomas, and Michael Scanlon.

Sue was born in Pittsburgh, PA, the oldest of seven children. Sue and Jerry raised their family in Wheaton and Homewood, IL. Later, they lived in Dixon, IL, where they still have many good friends. Jerry worked for 13 years at Raynor Garage Doors. During her time in Dixon, Sue was an active volunteer for Meals on Wheels and KSB Hospital and taught reading through a local adult literacy program.

After retirement, Sue and Jerry moved to Warwick, RI, and then to Marietta. Sue was an avid baseball fan who adored her grandchildren and loved to laugh. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, who is greatly missed by her family and many friends.

The family encourages donations to Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Greater Atlanta or Smile Train. The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 15, 2011 from 6:30-8:30pm and the service will be on Friday, September 16, 2011 at 11:00am in the chapel at the funeral home.
