Mary Aubrey Roney, 54, beloved daughter, wife, mother, sister, and aunt passed away peacefully Friday morning, July 7th, 2017 surrounded by loved ones in her home in Marietta, Georgia. She is the daughter of Richard Joseph Scott Jr. of Montrose, AL and Nancy Leigh Kelly of Birmingham, Alabama. Aubrey grew up in Dunwoody, GA, just north of Atlanta. She enjoyed water activities very early as a child and spent a great deal of time swimming in the neighborhood pool or sailing on Lake Lanier with her family. She graduated from Milton High School in 1981. After High School, she attended Auburn University where she received a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1985, graduating with High Honors and specializing in Vocational Rehabilitation for the deaf. While there, she developed life long bonds with her college roommates Tena Redding, Sheila Fortier, Lisa Aldridge, and Martha Wilson and enjoyed numerous "reunions" throughout the years.
Her first job out of college was at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf & Blind in Dothan, AL where she counseled the deaf in vocational rehabilitation. It was there in Dothan in 1989 that she met her husband, John Patrick Roney, of Yorba Linda, CA, an Army helicopter instructor pilot stationed at Fort Rucker, AL. They met at the Dothan First Presbyterian Bible Study and were married on October 13th, 1990 in Fairhope, AL. After a year together at Ft Rucker, they moved to Marietta in 1991 when John joined Lockheed Martin and have lived in Georgia ever since.
Upon arrival in Marietta, Aubrey began working at the Tommy Nobis Center assisting people with vocational rehabilitation, along with various assignments interpreting for the deaf, always giving and serving others. She worked there until just prior to her oldest son Kevin's birth and then became a homemaker thereafter focusing on the care, nurturing, and homeschooling of her four children, Kevin, Brian, Katie, and Sean. It was also during this time that the family enjoyed a special assignment for John's work living overseas in England for two years, and had the opportunity to visit many other countries like France, Spain, Italy, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland.
Aubrey was a woman who loved the Lord with all her heart and soul and was very intentional about her family and friends, always seeking the best for each person. She continuously demonstrated love, compassion, integrity, grace, and a servant heart. She was humble and made the people she met feel accepted and loved as they were. She was also extremely creative as evidenced by the amazing birthday cakes she made for each child's birthday every year, along with the games and skits she created for their parties. She had fun, enjoying life to the fullest, but also had the ability to delve deeper spiritually if the conversation warranted. She lived life well and impacted many people, she will be deeply missed.
Aubrey is preceded in death by her mother, Nancy Kelly Scott; and survived by her father, Richard Joseph Scott, Jr of Fairhope, AL, her husband of 26 years John Patrick Roney, and her children Kevin, Brian, Katie, and Sean. She is also survived by her sister Leigh Ann Odom and her husband Jack of Cumming, GA, her sister Carol Thayer and her husband Jay of Lebanon, TN, and her brother Rich Scott and his wife Beth of Indianapolis, IN, and ten nephews and nieces. She is also survived by her Aunt Marilyn Kelly Simpson and family of Birmingham, AL, and Aunt Joyce Kelly Armour and family of Luverne, AL.
