Born in Spalding County, GA on July 8, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Lovick Pierce Chapman and the late Ollie Ophelia Crawley Chapman. Mary grew up in Milner and Griffin, GA and graduated from Griffin High School. She and her husband Jack moved to Fort Payne, AL after WW II, and then to Cobb County in 1951, and she resided in Smyrna for 65 years. She was a long-time member of the Smyrna First United Methodist Church. Mary led an active, wonderful life! While raising her family she volunteered her services as a Brownie Scout Leader and as PTA President of both King Springs Elementary and Griffin Middle Schools in Smyrna. She returned to work after raising her family, and retired from the US Forest Service. She later became an active volunteer at the Emory Adventist Hospital and also as a poll worker for the Cobb County Election Board. Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, and she got such great pleasure from walking, watching Braves baseball games, reading, sewing, working crossword puzzles, playing bridge, ballroom dancing, and bargain shopping.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years and the love of her life, Jack Vernon Brooks, brother Pierce Crawley Chapman, sisters Alice Faye Chapman, Sara Frances Chapman, Iris Wynell Chapman Lamberth, Kathleen Elizabeth “Libby” Chapman Blanco, Helen Virginia Chapman Grant and Ruby Elaine Chapman.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law Lynne and Bret Smith of Mineral Bluff, GA, daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Mike Bailey and son Jeffrey Brooks, all of Smyrna, GA, grandchildren Kimberli Waid and Blake Bailey of Smyrna, GA, and Brandon Flowers of London, England, and two great grandsons Nathan Waid and Christopher Jacob “CJ” Bailey of Smyrna.
The family will receive visitors on Monday, February 29, from 1-4pm and from 6-8 pm at Georgia Memorial Park. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Tuesday, March 1 in the Winkenhofer Chapel of Georgia Memorial Park Funeral Home. Interment will follow immediately in the Georgia Memorial Park Cemetery.
