Mary Anne Massey, age 69, of Marietta, Georgia passed away on Monday, July 17, 2023. She was born in Corpus Christi, Texas on August 27, 1953 to the late Marjorie H. and Robert Schimmelmann. She grew up in Jacksonville, Florida then attended Berry College studying and excelling in Mathematics. She was an excellent wife, teacher, and mentor to her family. She was employed by Troutman Sanders Law Firm, however her true calling and greatest joy was providing for her family, creatively engineering things - our own “Queen of Make Do,” and living life unapologetically on her terms.
In her spare time, she was a strategic and talented tennis player, with her teams winning 11 coveted ALTA City Championship plates. She adored and loved her grandkids along with her grown kids and their spouses. Mary Anne was particularly fond of reading, Sudoku, watching Jeopardy, traveling, and playing Pickleball. She was a top contributor in her Facebook group with hundreds and hundreds of followers engaged with her witty, clever, humorous blogs. She was an eloquent writer who could draw you in with her sharp wit, easy turn of phrase, and strong point of view.
In addition to her parents, Mary Anne is preceded in death by her brothers; Wayne, Chuck, Tommy, Gary, and Keith. She is survived by her husband of 50 years Rufus (they met and married while attending Berry College), son Daniel (Elizabeth), daughters Bonnie Padgett (Christopher) and Grace Pyron (Joey), siblings: Joanne, Allen, and Donna, and grandchildren: Hayden, Henry, June, and Georgia.
Bette Midler’s beautifully written song so perfectly embraced Mary Anne:
Did you ever know that you're my hero?
You're everything I wish I could be
I could fly higher than an eagle
For you are the wind beneath my wings
