Margaret was born on Friday, May 13, 1932 in Neptune, New Jersey to the late Frances and Mybon Layton of Freehold, New Jersey. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Richard Chester Smith and her brother Marvin Layton.
Affectionately known as “Mommom” by her family, she loved telling stories of her childhood and shared her love of family. She is survived by her children, Bonnie Jean Ritter (Doug), Marian Frances Fordham (Rick), Barbara Anne Linebarger (Mark), and Margaret Ellen Thomas (Steve). She was blessed with 7 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She always had a story to tell about her family and looked forward to their visits and calls.
Margaret was raised on a dairy farm and was always surrounded by great friends throughout her life. She graduated from Manasquan High School in Manasquan, New Jersey. As a military wife, she was always ready for the next move, which happened often as her girls grew up. As most military wives do, she worked multiple jobs and called herself a jack of all trades. She owned a restaurant in New Jersey, worked for Bell South as an operator in Georgia, sold carpet in LA, but her last job was during her later years where she taught senior citizens how to make beautiful greeting cards. She formed the West Cobb Stampers group and at one time, taught at three senior centers in Cobb County, GA. As a military wife and mother, she understood how hard it was for the troops to be away from family. Her stampers helped make extra cards and worked with the USO to ship hundreds of them all over the world so they could use them to send notes, birthday and holiday wishes back to their family. She was recognized multiple time by Cobb County Senior Services department for her work with senior citizens and even named as West Cobb Senior of the Year. As much as she loved helping others, her real joy came from her family. She was described by her friends as the sweetest person they knew who loved to laugh. She will be missed by family and friends.
Funeral service will be 1 PM Monday, August 26 at Carmichael Funeral Home in Marietta. The family will greet friends one hour before the service.
