The son of the late Betsy Hill Watson and James Watson, Justin Columbus Watson was born on June 1st, 1985 in Norfolk, VA. He was full of curiosity as a child and made friends wherever he went. Justin attended high school in the Atlanta area. His love of music took him to Auburn University, where he marched in the band and developed a love for Auburn football. Justin then transitioned to the University of West Georgia, where he graduated with his Bachelor of Science in Geography.
Justin had a deep passion for science, all living creatures, and teaching. After years working with dogs at Barking Hound Kennel, he joined the Nightcrawlers at Zoo Atlanta, where he had the time of his life teaching young people about animals. He continued to nurture young minds as a biology and environmental science teacher. His impact on young people far outweighed the length of his time as an educator. Justin spent his more recent years in production at Terminus Tees, where he enjoyed working with his hands.
Outside of his professional life, Justin’s true passion was music; he was a legacy of his musical mother, Betsy. A trumpet player in his younger years, Justin developed a velvety singing voice and graced many karaoke stages. He was also an enthusiastic supporter of local music. His friends would say he always had a new band or song to share. Justin was a walking library of music and wouldn’t miss a live show if he could help it.
Justin also loved sports and was a staunch Braves fan and obscure minor league team enthusiast. He loved reading, game nights with family and friends, and visiting breweries nationwide, seeking the perfect pint. In recent years, he travelled the American West and Alaska, making lasting memories with friends and family.
Justin was preceded in death by his adoring mother, Betsy, and companion K9 of 13 years, Maddox. He is survived by his devoted father Jim (Betsy), his two loving brothers Ethan and Zach, dedicated girlfriend Lauren Hemmings, uncles Jimmy and Johnny Hill, his steadfast aunt, Darlene Hauser (Jeff), cousin Jason (Logan), as well as the Edward and Betty Roberts family. He also leaves behind countless adoring friends. We will miss his sharp wit, his infectious laugh, his brilliant mind, and his warm heart.
A visitation for Justin will be held Wednesday, September 13, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Georgia Memorial Park Funeral Home, 2000 Cobb Pkwy SE, Marietta, GA 30060, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 PM with Pastor Sammy Burgess officiating.
Following the service, in the spirit of Justin, we invite friends and family to gather for a pint at Schoolhouse Brewery.
