He attended Morganton School thru the 7th grade and then went to farming school. He then joined the U. S. Army and served in Japan. Mr. Davenport was a member of Green Acres Baptist Church and later Olive Springs Baptist Church. He retired with 30 plus years of service with Mead Container Corporation. He was the last living of 10 siblings.
Preceded in death by his parents; Jay Zetler and Myrtle Sylvania Roberson Davenport; wife, Barbara Ann Jarrard Davenport; sons, Joseph Byron “Joey” Davenport, Jr., James Howard Davenport and a grandson, Andrew “Andy” Halyard.
Survived by children, Lydia Wadsworth, Glenn Anthony “Tony” Davenport and his wife, Michelle Davenport, Gregory Scott Davenport; grandchildren, Chris Halyard, Ashley Cain, Ethan Davenport, Ty Davenport, Elyzabeth Walters, Michael Davenport, David Davenport, Ryan Davenport; great grandchildren; Madison Halyard, Dalton Halyard, Austin Pagano, Abbi Cain, Jada Davenport, Zoey Davenport, Lara Davenport, Savannah Abston; great great grandchildren, Hudson Halyard and a new baby that will be born in August.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, June 17 at 12 Noon in the chapel of Georgia Memorial Park Funeral Home with Pastor Robert Tilson officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Georgia Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends between the hours of 9 AM until 12 Noon at the funeral home.
