John was born on September 20, 1974 to Mary and Jim McGaughy in Jackson, Mississippi. He graduated from Walton High School in Marietta, Georgia in 1993 and the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1998 with a degree in Industrial Engineering. After graduating from Georgia Tech, John moved to Denver, Colorado.
John was extraordinary for lots of reasons but two of those were his loyalty to his friends and family and the way he was a champion for everyone. He was passionate about Colorado Sports especially the Broncos and Rockies, and GA Tech Football, and was a lover of hot tubs, skiing, dive bars, and the Golden Nugget. He loved live music, frequented Red Rocks and never missed a Sunday Panic. John was a wonderful father and friend, loving son, brother and uncle, and a devoted husband. John and Maggey met in 2014 and spent 9 incredible years together; from pool parties at Park Place to creating a happy home in Wash Park, and lots of memorable travel and adventures. John may have had many interests and loves but his greatest joy and accomplishment was becoming a father to Ada in 2019 and Chappy in 2022. He was the best Daddy and will be deeply missed.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents James and Bonne McGaughy and Phyllis and Bill Moershel. He is survived by his wife Maggey and their children Ada and Chapman, his parents Mary and James McGaughy, his brother David (Kristen) McGaughy, nephews Porter and Sam McGaughy, and niece Roane McGaughy. He is also survived by his aunts, uncles, cousins and many lifelong friends.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at Episcopal Church of St. Peter and St. Paul. There will be a celebratory reception following the service at Green Coyote Cantina.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the American Brain Tumor Association in John’s memory and honor. Throughout this journey, the McGaughy family has been dismayed by the number of friends and family who have been impacted by brain cancer, specifically, glioblastoma. It is their hope that your contribution can help fund the research to find a cure.
