John Aaron Hicks, Jr. of Powder Springs, Georgia passed away on May 3, 2023, at the age of 95. A Funeral Service will be held in his honor on Saturday. May 6, 2023, at Mayes Ward Dobbins Macland Chapel with Pastor Tom Compton officiating. The family will receive visitors from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM on Saturday. John was a native of Cobb County having been born on June 24, 1927, on Hicks Road in Marietta Georgia. He was the son of the late John Aaron Hicks, Sr., and Ada Era Brewer Hicks. He attended Robert L. Osborne School until which time he left school to work in the family store, Hicks Grocery Store, on Austell Road. At age 17, John worked as a surveyor for Bell Aircraft. He also installed the first air conditioners in the ceilings at Bell Aircraft, delivered blueprints in the Bell Bomber Plant and later delivered pipes driving an A Model dual wheel truck. In May 1946, John was drafted to serve his country in World War II until 1948. He remained stateside for Air Force radar school. In December 1950, John was called up again and proudly served his country in the US Army, serving two years in Korea.
Returning home in late 1952, John began driving for Foster- Hicks Produce Company. This began his 55+ years of long-haul driving. He also drove for Complete Auto Transit, Sinclair Motor Company, McLean Trucking Company, and Sweetheart Paper Company. In 1953, he met and married his wife of 64 years Nellie Louise Ware Hicks. In 1968, John and Louise bought their property in Powder Springs Georgia and built their family home. Following his “official” retirement in 1999, John began hauling and selling pine straw and wheat straw on his Powder Springs property. He worked 6 to 7 days a week, selling his straw and never retired again. John loved his trucks and trailers, enjoyed taking care of his chickens, gardening, and traveling. He traveled to all 50 states multiple times, but his favorite place on earth was Alaska.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie Louise Ware Hicks, his parents, sisters, Martha Sue Johnson Daniels, and Carolyn Barfield, son-in-law, Richard L. Moore, and daughter, Robbi Jeanine Hicks-Wylie. He is survived by his daughter, Sherri L. Moore, White Plains, Georgia, grandson, Brian Jones (Susanna ) of Powder Springs, Georgia, granddaughter, Jessica Matthews (Ron) of Dallas, Georgia, granddaughter, Jennifer Keith (Lee) of Georgetown, Tennessee, grandson, Jonathan Moore (Kelli) of Marietta, Georgia, grandson, Denver Wyllie (Mary Frances) of Macon, Georgia, grandson, Jason Moore (Barbara) of Holly Springs Georgia, grandson, Bryan Moore (Nicole ) of Houston, Texas, granddaughter, Christie Patton (Jarrod) of Atlanta Georgia, 15 great grandchildren, Sister, Betty Duggar (Don) of Carrollton Georgia and numerous nieces, nephews and special friends.
John was an active member of the American Legion Post 0294 in Powder Springs, Georgia.
