Dear Lance and Chris,    I  see that today was your mom's memorial service, and I am just so sorry that I could not be there.  I am sure many people who   taught with Joan or who knew her only briefly, recognized what a special woman she was.  
When we were children I couldn't wait for summer when my "big cousin Joanie" to come up from Atlanta to visit.  She was always fun.  My parents just loved that girl.  She had a way of putting people at ease and making you feel as if you could tell her anything.  A sweet, sweet spirit. 

One of my favorite memories from junior high was when Joan asked me to be a bridesmaid in her wedding.  She was so glamorous that day. I didn't realize until I scrolled through those 150 pictures just now how in certain ones we looked a lot alike.  I flatter myself because Joan was a model at one of the department stores in Atlanta when she was in college.  Being six feet tall pays off occasionally, she told me.

I will miss her so much, and I can't even begin to know how large a gap her passing is leaving in your lives.  We were blessed to have known her.
