He was born on August 29, 1946 to Joseph Albert Nichols and Sarah Warren Nichols. Jim grew up in Powder Springs, GA where he graduated from McEachern High School and was named Mr. McEachern in 1964. He attended the University of Georgia and worked as a draftsman on the C-5 Galaxy project at Lockheed, where he completed a Lockheed engineering program.
He worked for over 50 years in the architectural products and commercial glass business, where he was a mentor to many and an icon in the industry. After working for ACD Glass, he spent a decade as co-owner of Nichols Reece & Company and owner of Nichols Reece Specialties. He later held management positions at various companies, including YKK Architectural Products and JAMCo before retiring from Glass Systems Inc. in 2017.
He was a talented guitar player and woodworker with an unparalleled sense of humor. He was known fondly by his family as “Pappy.” They always came first in his life, and he took great pride in their many accomplishments.
He is survived by his loving wife, Lila Nichols; children Heather Ross (Craig) and Nick Nichols (Katie); stepson Corey Takes (Hannah); grandchildren Will Ross, Anna Nichols, Mitch Ross, Addie Rose Nichols, Gracie Mae Takes, and Cole Takes; sister Linda Self (Bill). He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Ronald, Donald, and Billy.
Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation at Mayes Ward Dobbins Funeral Home in Powder Springs between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 21, 2024. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 22, 2024, followed by interment at Kennesaw Memorial Park in Marietta.
