Hazel Stanfield Austin of Kennesaw, Georgia passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, October 27th after a short battle with cancer. Hazel was a native of Jasper, Georgia and was born on May 29, 1931 to the late Minnie Wigington and James Stanfield. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Chet Austin and her children Sharon Rakestraw (Dan), Lorrie Long, David Austin (Joanna), along with her seven grandchildren Brian (Cassie), Kris (Meghan), Jessica (Evan), Cameron, Chet, Amelia (Will), Grace, and her eight great-grandchildren, Emerson, Cade, Blakely, and Quinn Llewallyn, Brinson, Austin, and Landon Luda, and Rowan Llewallyn. She is also survived by her siblings, Bob (Ann) Stanfield, Pete Eaton, and Peggy Mosley.
A longtime resident of Cobb County, Hazel moved to the area to work for Lockheed during the 1950's. It was here where she met Chet, and they married and settled in his home of Smyrna. The two spent many wonderful years raising their family in Smyrna. They were proud organizers and members of Tillman United Methodist Church where Hazel also sang in the sanctuary choir. Hazel was an avid tennis player as well and treasured the many friends she made during her years playing ALTA at Pinetree Country Club. Painting was another hobby she greatly loved along with her favorite pastime – dominoes!
But more than anything Hazel cherished spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She took enormous pride in her family and always showered them with generosity and affection. Vacations, which often included the entire family, and trips to her beloved Destin condo will always hold a special place in everyone's memories.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 - 5:00 pm on Sunday, October 30th at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home, Historic Marietta Chapel. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, October 31st in the Chapel of the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Calvary Children's Home, 1430 Lost Mountain Road, Powder Springs, GA 30127 (www.calvarykids.org/donate.php) or to the Kennesaw State University Foundation, 3391 Town Place Drive, Kennesaw, GA 30144.
