Harry Lee Lloyd, Jr. of Canton, Georgia March 3,1932 - October 12, 2023
Harry grew up in Durham, NC. He was educated in the Durham school system. He attended University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1955 and Master of Education degree in 1960. Harry was the first person in his family to attain a college degree.
Harry Lee Lloyd, Jr. married Carolyn Jean Speed in Durham, NC, on September 4, 1954. They built a life and family together enjoying 51 years of loving marriage before Carolyn passed away in 2005. Later, Harry was blessed to find love and abundant happiness again with Joanne Wampler. They enjoyed 14 beautiful years together.
Harry's passion in life was baseball. He played high school ball at Durham (NC) High School. Harry was an all ACC second baseman for his beloved UNC Tar Heels. He played semi-pro ball in summer leagues from 1951 to 1960. He was an assistant coach at UNC for two years. Harry coached at high schools in the Durham area before accepting a position at The Westminster Schools in Atlanta, where he coached and taught for 37 years. Harry was manager for a Single A minor league team, the Auburn Phillies, in 1973 when they won the league and he was named Manager of the Year. He was a founding member of the Georgia Dugout Club. Harry was inducted into the Westminster Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Georgia High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 2002.
Harry and Joanne shared a love for golf, reading and enjoyed their life together on Lake Chatuge. However, what Harry enjoyed the most was spending time with his Lloyd and Wampler families. Together, Joanne and Harry had a combined 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Harry is preceded in death by his first wife, Carolyn, his father, Harry Lee Lloyd, Sr, and mother, Lillian Thompson Lloyd, his sister, Lois Dezern, and brother, Vernon Lloyd, all of Durham, NC.
Harry is survived by his wife, Joanne, three sons, Bradford (Therese) of Woodstock, GA, Patrick of Cumming, GA and Russell (Whitney) of Huntsville, AL. He is also survived by his sister, Virginia Johnson of Durham, NC, and sister-in-law Wanna Lloyd of Durham, NC; five grandchildren Bekah (Stephen) Schmidt of Huntsville, AL, Cameron (Melissa) Lloyd of Boise, ID, Ansley (Will) Murray of Atlanta, GA, Caroline Lloyd of Cumming, GA, and Connor Lloyd of Statesboro, GA; four great grandchildren, Kyle, Emma, Sophia and Allison Schmidt of Huntsville, AL, and was awaiting the birth of a fifth in Boise Idaho; four nieces and nephews and their extended families; as well as his Wampler family, Mike (Faye) Wampler of Granbury, TX, Kathy (Scott) West of John’s Creek, GA, Richard (Connie) Wampler of Dorian, GA, and Libby (Mark) Coker of Hiawassee, GA.
Harry will be remembered for his integrity, quick wit, wisdom, passion for coaching, sharp dressing, steadfast faith and the unconditional love he had for his family.
A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at 3:00 o'clock, in the Georgia Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel, 2000 Cobb Parkway SE, Marietta, Georgia, 30060. The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Wounded Warriors Foundation or the charity of your choice.
