Ekun of Isale Eko, Lagos, and Ann Anyaegbunam, daughter of the late Reverend George
Anyaegbunam.
Georgina was among the pioneering cohort of nursing students at University College Ibadan, where she was trained by nurses from the prestigious Florence Nightingale Hospital in England.
She began her career at the University Medical Center in Nsukka, eventually rising to the
position of Chief Matron at the University Medical Center in Enugu. She was widely respected
for her compassion, leadership, and clinical excellence.
Following her graduation, Georgina embarked on a 14-day sea voyage to London to complete a
nursing rotation at Hammersmith Hospital, where she met her future husband, Dr. Onuora Louis
Ekpechi. They married on January 2, 1960, and returned to Nigeria to build a life rooted in faith,
service, and family.
Together, they raised five children:
• Professor Ifeoma Modebe, Engr. Amechi Ekpechi, Barrister Chineze Achukwu, Professor
Nkechi Mbaezue and Mr. Olisa Ekpechi .She is survived by her five children, nineteen Grandchildren and three Greatgrandchildren.
During the Biafran War, while serving at Amaigbo general Hospital, she worked on the frontlines
as an Administrative Nursing Officer, even while heavily pregnant. Just five days after giving
birth, she returned to continue nursing war victims, a testament to her resilience and selfless
devotion.
In 1978, she was honored with initiation into the Otu Odu Society in Onitsha, earning the
revered title Enyi Odoziaku Omeorafu.
A devout Catholic and dedicated member of the Sacred Heart Society, her life was deeply
grounded in faith. Georgina fought a great fight and finished the race strong. We are honored to
have witnessed her life and to have the beneficiaries of her quiet and prayerful soul.
Rest in peace and power our angel-until we meet again in the great beyond.
