Mr. Mills was born in Canton, Georgia on February 27, 1919, son of the late Jonas Ciccero Mills and the late Mary Lou Turner Mills. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Mills, and by nine siblings. Mr. Mills served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. stationed in Harrison Bay, Tennessee prior to World War II. He then joined the U. S. Army serving in the South Pacific during World War II as a Sergeant in the 353rd Engineer Battalion. Mr. Mills worked for a number of years at Lockheed and then later retired from Mead Packaging. He was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church in Holly Springs.
Survivors include his wife, the former Louise Law, to whom he was married on September 6, 1950; a son, Fred William Mills, Jr. and his wife, Rebecca, Silver Creek; a daughter, Julia Mills Sloss, Rome; four grandchildren, Christopher Mills and his wife, Joni, Jody Mills and his wife, Cierra, Delia Mills, and Amanda Fincher and her husband, Luke; seven great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 14, 2015, at 11am in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, with the Rev. Greg "Big Daddy" Dean officiating. Interment will follow at 2pm in the Kennesaw Memorial Park with the American Legion Post #5 Honor Guard presenting military honors.
The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Wednesday from 6 until 8pm. At other hours, they will be at their respective residences.
Pallbearers are asked to assemble at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Thursday at 10:30am and include: Fred William Mills, Jr., Christopher Mills, Jody Mills, Jordan Mills, Rick Sloss, Zach Snow, and Luke Fincher.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Friends of Harrison Bay, 6120 Shirley Pond Road, Harrison, TN 37341.
