at her home in Kennesaw, Georgia.
She was 96 years old.
Dora was born in Paulding County, Georgia to William and Mary
Lou Lingerfelt. She was the second of their ten children and grew
up at their home in Dahlonega. She gave her heart to the Lord at a
revival meeting when she was 13, and that decision was the
foundation for her lifetime of church work.
Dora moved to Atlanta in the 50’s, where she entered nurses’s
training in preparation for a career in healthcare. She believed
nursing was a calling rather than a profession, and was serious
about serving God in that way. But God had other plans for her,
and when she met Bill Strain, after much prayer she decided that
God’s plan for her was marriage and family. She left nurses’
training to marry him in 1959.Dora devoted herself to being a full-time wife and mother.
She and Bill had two children, Mary and Billy, whom she loved and
nurtured. She was a fond wife and mother and kept bulging photo
albums and scrapbooks to commemorate every special occasion or
achievement in her family. Dora was a talented artist and created
many of the artworks displayed in her home.
She was a church worker active in Clairmont Baptist Church and
the First Baptist Church of Chamblee while the family lived in
Atlanta, then in the First Baptist Church of Marietta when she and
Bill moved to Kennesaw to retire in 2000.
Dora was diagnosed with heart failure in 2010 and accepted her
declining health gracefully and with the strength of her lifelong
faith. That grace and faith were her greatest gift to her children and
all who knew her, and she is deeply missed.
She is survived by her daughter Mary Strain of Kennesaw, Georgia,
her son Billy Strain of Kennesaw, her brother Bob Lingerfelt and
his wife Sherri Lingerfelt in Montana, her sister in law Linda
Lingerfelt of Dahlonega Georgia, her brother- and sister-in-law
Dick and Helen Haynie of Rising Fawn, Georgia, her sister-in-law
Kathleen Strain of Marietta, Georgia, her sister-in-law Marilyn
Strain of Canton, Georgia, and many nieces and nephews.
