Charles “Chuck” Newton Crandall III, 74, died April 1, 2022, with his family by his side in Marietta, Ga. He was born November 27, 1947, in Coronado, Calif. to Charles, Jr. and Elizabeth (Davis) Crandall. Born into a U.S. Navy family, he grew up in Washington, D.C. and graduated from Walt Whitman High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Virginia Tech.
He met Susan Ganske of Roanoke,Va. in 1967 on a blind date to see The Beach Boys. They married in 1970 prior to his deployment as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for exemplary service and professionalism against a hostile force. After returning from Vietnam, he earned a master’s degree in environmental engineering from Georgia Tech.
Chuck worked as an environmental engineer and project manager for CH2M Hill in the Gainesville, Fla.; Columbia, S.C.; and Atlanta, Ga. offices from 1973 until his retirement in 2016. He designed and managed wastewater treatment projects throughout the U.S. and was passionate about the profession as well as his clients and colleagues.
Chuck was also a loving husband and had an adventurous spirit. He and Susan raised two children, Karen and Brian, and together they went on many memorable camping and sailing vacations. He was a devoted grandfather to Jackson and Gia Rivers and Ansley and Julia Durden.
Chuck adored his children and grandchildren and enjoyed watching lacrosse games and music performances, helping with school projects and carpool, and taking his grandkids to Florida, Hilton Head Island, and the North Georgia Mountains. He loved exploring the natural world and traveled extensively throughout the western U.S. Chuck was also an avid reader, ham radio operator, and Atlanta sports fan.
Chuck faced health challenges, but never complained. Susan became his primary caregiver after a stroke in 2016 with support from Annie and Burnell Johnson. He went into respiratory distress on March 29, 2022, from which he was not able to recover.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Crandall of Marietta, Ga.; sister Kathy Crandall of Millville, Del.; daughter, Karen (Chris) Durden; son, Brian Crandall; grandchildren, Jackson and Gia Rivers and Ansley and Julia Durden, all of Atlanta, Ga.
A funeral service and reception will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2022, at 2:00pm at H.M. Patterson & Son-Canton Hill Chapel, 1157 Old Canton Rd, Marietta, Ga. Internment will be held on Monday, April 18, 2022, at 11:00am at Georgia National Cemetery, 1080 Scott Hudgens Dr, Canton, Ga.
