Larry Meyer (Carl Lawrence Meyer) shuffled off this mortal coil and passed into eternity on January 24, 2022. He battled cancer with courage, dignity, gentleness, a sense of humor, and most importantly, unshakeable faith in the perfect will of our loving God. He held tightly to the promises of Jesus Christ and now dwells in his glorious presence. Larry was born in Maryland on April 12, 1964, to Carl and Elaine Meyer (née Perry). He graduated from SW Dekalb Highschool in 1982, where he played goalie and was captain of the soccer team. He was also selected to play on the All-Stars Soccer team in high school. All those years of soccer paid off when he won the Mr. Legs contest in high school!
He attended undergraduate at Emory University, where he majored in English and Philosophy. Emory’s soccer team selected him as a walk-on his sophomore year. He played goalie for the team until he graduated. In 1986 he captured the continuing record for the most shutouts (9) in a season. He still holds the record for the 3rd most saves (12), with 26 goal assists, the third most goals-against average, and the 7th most wins. Upon achieving his undergraduate degree, he began graduate studies in English and Philosophy at Emory before heading to law school at the University of Georgia. Larry distinguished himself at UGA Law by participating in the Moot Court competition, working as Articles Editor of the Georgia Law Review, and serving as president of the Christian Legal Society. After graduating with a Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, he clerked for two years for the Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court. He was an active trial attorney for nearly 30 years. He tried dozens of jury and bench trials, argued hundreds of motions before judges across the state, and argued cases before the Georgia Supreme Court and Georgia Court of Appeals.
Larry was happiest with his head in a book or his feet on the grass! He loved poetry, opera, theology, literature, dogs (and cats), nature, hiking, camping, woodworking, kayaking, etc. He studied scripture and Christian writers, and thanks to the most phenomenal memory, he could quote anything from Saint Augustine to a humorous line from a Coen Brother’s movie!
In 1998, Larry married the love of his life, Amy Bardill. They were blessed with two amazing children, Madeleine Joyce and Samuel Carl. Larry was a devoted and treasured husband and father. He had a unique ability to live “in the moment.” This winsome quality made him a wonderful dad, uncle, and cousin. Small children delighted him, and they loved him dearly. His favorite quote was from Saint Augustine: “You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until it rests in you.” He will be fiercely missed, but we know that Larry’s heart is at rest in our Lord. Praise be to God.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 24 years, Amy Bardill Meyer, daughter Madeleine Joyce, and son Samuel Carl. Sister Sandi Meyer Trebuchon and her husband Moe, brother Paul Meyer, and several beloved nieces and nephews and his devoted dog, Chester. His parents Carl and Elaine preceded him in death.
