Steve was always there by my side.  We served together stateside and overseas.  All the words above is what he was about.  Every time I would go to him and he was the one to make it all better or put everything in perspective.    He was one of the best!!!  He was “Old School” that were missing today.  Steve, I learned a lot from you.  Always made me happy and brought that needed smile to my face good times and bad.  Thank You, you will be missed.

I worked with Steve at LPD at the old South Precinct.  It was some how comforting to know he was on duty for the day.  He was always friendly and had great stories to tell.  On Friday's, we often were allowed to leave a bit early.  Sometimes he would come around and tell the clerical staff we can leave.  I appreciated the offer but sometimes I just wanted to finish up what I was working on before I left.  If I was still there when he came back into the room, he would say, "I thought I told you to go home.  Now that's an ORDER!!" -  So I started calling him Sergeant Friday -  Well Sergeant Friday, you are home now.  Rest in Peace my friend.

I was so sadden to hear the news about Steve.  I had no idea he was ill.  We had many great times together at LPD.  He was full of stories and was never at a lost for words.   My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.  


Steve was my dad's best friend; a lifelong and loyal friend to both my parents. I know he shared a special bond with my mom too, especially because Steve was a proud Marine, just like my Mom's father Grandpa Morey. He spent his life protecting and serving - our nation, the City of Lansing, MI (where he was a police officer), and any one who was lucky enough to cross paths with him. Not only was he a soldier, he was also a scholar of military history, well-read, well-spoken, well-travelled. His storytelling equalled that of my father. Him and my dad could brag about their high school football careers for hours - no doubt football was formative for both he and my father in building the toughness and discipline that contributed to his success in both military and civilian life. He came out to support my family on countless occasions through the various losses we have endured in recent years - notably in my father's passing which was just 3 years ago last week. It was evident that he believed that friendship - really, brotherhood - was a sacred duty. He was old school. Every time he saw me, he would ask me how "my bride" is doing; then remind me that Ashley is "a doll" and how lucky I am to have stumbled into such a catch. He was taken much too soon. Thanks Steve, you will be missed.

I also worked with Steve at LPD. I enjoyed sharing military stories with Steve, and truly appreciated his willingness to "tell it like it is". He was also a fellow hockey dad, and always spoke with great pride of his children.  God bless you my brother.

As deeply saddened as I was when the call came from Mickie, a smile appeared on my face as I remembered time spent with Steve.  "One-of-a -Kind" sells him short - Steve was a unique combination of bombast and humility; authority and compassion; teacher and student;  soldier and diplomat; complex and simple.  The lives of everyone whose path he crossed - however briefly or intimately - forever carry his mark.  I consider myself blessed to be among them. Godspeed, brave soldier. Your reward in Heaven awaits.

I had the pleasure of working with Steve often until my retirement in 1996. Most of our conversations outside of law-enforcement were always about our experiences in the military,  something he was very proud of.  I knew Steve as a highly intelligent, smart, friendly individual and I will miss him, RIP my friend.

I will be forever grateful that I was able to spend time with Steve and his family as an adult and not just the little bratty girl who snitched on him! I will never eat at Don’s Drive In without a special thought of Steve.  May God comfort his family.

I ONLY WORKED WITH STEVE FOR A FEW YEARS AT LPD BEFORE I RETIRED BUT I ALWAYS ENJOYED OUR HISTORY CONVERSATIONS OVER COFFEE. AFTER HE RETIRED WE WOULD GET TOGETHER ANY TIME HE CAME UP TO NORTHERN MICHIGAN. TWO YEARS AGO I SPENT TWO WEEKS WITH HIM ON MARCO ISLAND. I'LL CHERISH THOSE MEMORIES OF GREAT TIMES FOREVER. ... Things i shared with Steve...  worked side by side as Sergeants at the Lansing Police Dept.  Steve was a solid leader and friend.  Shared countless laughs (mostly over stupid things we both had done in our lives).  God Bless You Steve.  Rest in Peace Brother.  Darin Larner

I worked with Steve at LPD.  He was a great guy. He was always the type of person who wanted to help. He really looked for ways to make the job easier and smarter and I really appreciated this. We were both Vets and shared some great stories, I know he was very proud of his military service. 

I hope that fond memories help you through this time of loss.
