Robert, Bob to all who knew him, was born in Mount Sterling, Illinois to Robert and Marian Shields Nowlan. Bob was one of seven children.
He was a scholar, researcher, teacher, storyteller, lecturer and published more than forty books on mathematics, movies, the U.S. Presidents, political science and trivia. As an undergraduate, he pursued a double major in mathematics and history. He was in the U.S. Army when the U.S.S.R. launched Sputnik. Because Bob’s MOS was mathematics he was discharged 3 days later as were thousands in the military with talents that would make the U.S. competitive with the Soviets.
Bob went on to complete a Master’s degree at Northern Illinois University and later a Ph.D. at the University of Notre Dame. He was a professor of mathematics at colleges and universities for over forty years and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Southern Connecticut State University. Bob had a passion for learning and writing which he fervently pursued into retirement.
However, more than anything, Bob adored his family and treasured all the times he could be with his children and grandchildren. He took tremendous pride in all of their accomplishments and activities.
He is survived by his wife Wendy, and his four children and spouses, Robert (Andy), Philip (Crystal), Edward (Christine), Jennifer (Pete), his stepsons Evan (Brenda) and Andrew (Melanie), nine grandchildren and his youngest brother Danny and extended family members of his deceased siblings.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.hodgesjosberger.com for the Nowlan family.
