Loren Edward Beck, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away at the age of 92 on September 23, 2024, after a brave battle with cancer. Born on July 14, 1932, in Columbus, Ohio, Loren was a source of inspiration with many interests that enriched the lives of those around him. A proud alumnus of Columbus East High School and Capital University, he excelled academically and demonstrated remarkable leadership as Class Vice President and captain of the football team at East High, later serving as the football team captain at Capital University. He earned the Berea Boots Award and the Senior Award for scholarship and athletic achievement. It was during these years that he met his beloved wife, Dolores Elaine Beck (Evans). Their love story spanned over 70 years, marked by deep affection and unwavering support.
After graduating, Loren honorably served in the United States Marine Corps, achieving the rank of First Lieutenant. He and Dolores and their young family moved to Youngstown, Ohio, after his service. Loren joined the family business, City Ash, which later became part of Browning-Ferris Industries. He enjoyed a successful career as Vice President of the Steel Region overseeing operations, sales, and acquisitions with over 8000 employees reporting to him. He was known as a manager with lofty expectations who was more than willing to help his employees succeed.
Loren was an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church and contributed to the local Boy Scouts troop, leading the pancake supper fundraisers, during his sons’ involvement. He cherished family fishing trips to the Canadian and Minnesota Boundary Waters and traveled the world with Dolores, enjoying even more fishing adventures in Alaska, Costa Rica, Brazil, and Chile. Their family made unforgettable memories during their ski trips in Colorado and exploring Africa together. In later years, Loren and Dolores enjoyed playing golf and socializing with their dearest friends. Most recently, they became full time residents in Marco Island, Florida where they enjoyed leisure and social time at their condominium and participated in services at Marco Lutheran Church.
Loren and Dolores generously supported scholarships for future Lutheran pastors and Capital University. Loren was an enthusiastic follower of Ohio State football, an avid reader, and enjoyed a daily crossword puzzle and nature. He was also known for his love of ice cream and other sweets. Loren is remembered for his warm humor, leadership, and deep dedication to his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Edith Beck; his sister, Marilyn Steele; and his son, Brian Beck. He is survived by his loving wife, Dolores; children Doug Beck (and his wife, Donna) and Wende Larrimore (and her husband, Kevin); grandchildren Trevor and Marshall Beck, Lindsey and Allie Larrimore; and many cherished friends.
A memorial service will be held at Marco Lutheran Church on October 13, 2024, at 12:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Habitat for Humanity, Marco Lutheran Church, or the charity of your choice in his honor.
