Thomas G. Brown, Jr., age 96, of Swampscott, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at the Kaplan House in Danvers on January 22, 2019. Beloved son of the late Thomas G. Brown and Lily B. Brown. Predeceased by his wife of 41 years, Joyce Baker Brown and by his sister Virginia B. Clarke. Loving father of Susan B. Brown of Marblehead and Wendy B. Keyes, and her husband Charles T. of Marblehead. Loving brother of Lily B. Rice, Wenham, and Lewis H. Brown, Topsham, Maine. Loving uncle to many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Husband of Mimi Bathchelder-Brown of Santa Rosa, CA.
Tom graduated from Deerfield Academy in 1942. He went on the serve as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd Infantry Division on the front lines of Germany in World War II. Upon his return he worked for the State Street Bank for many years as Vice President and Director of Marketing. In his later years he worked as Director of Development, Emerson Hospital, Concord, MA, Trust Officer for Fiduciary Trust Company, Boston, and Executive Director, Harmony Grove Cemetery.
In 1957, he was named one of the Outstanding Young Men of Greater Boston. In 1963 he was appointed to the Massachusetts Port Authority by Governor Chub Peabody, serving until 1972. He worked tirelessly with Executive Director, Ed King of Mass Port Authority, prior to King’s becoming Governor of Massachusetts. He also served as: President of the Aero Club of New England, President and Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army of Greater Boston, General Assembly of Boston YMCA, Trustee of MA College of Pharmacy, Treasurer and Director of the International Friendship League, Founder of the Giver’s Group, Member of the Corporation of the Old North Church, Boston, Member of the State Club, Inc., Steering Committee of the Peabody-Essex Museum, Member of the Corporation of the Rivers Country Day School, Trustee of Thompson Academy, Former President Alumni Associations Deerfield Academy, Trustee Tower School, Marblehead, and Founding Trustee Pingree School, So. Hamilton.
Tom was an avid yachtsman and loved cruising. Member and Past Commodore of the Nahant Dory Club. Long standing member of the Eastern Yacht Club, serving as Secretary for many years. He was also a competitive athlete especially enjoying ice hockey, tennis and badminton.
He was known for his passion for marching band music, piano playing, singing, his dogs and family. He loved sharing World War II Stories and his terrific sense of humor.
A funeral service will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 135 Lafayette Street, Marblehead on Friday, February 1 at 11AM. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made in his name to Deerfield Academy, P.O. Box 306, Deerfield, MA 01342 or Care Dimensions, 75 Sylvan Street, Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923.
