MARBLEHEAD - A Marbleheader all her life, Phyllis R. Tobin, 88 passed away at her home on September 11, 2019, surrounded in love by her family. She was married to the late Richard H. Tobin and was the daughter of Leonard G. and Ina B. Hutchinson, she was a graduate of Marblehead High, Class of 1949 and the New England Baptist Hospital School of Nursing.
Phyllis was in the first Brownie Troop ever formed in Girl Scouting and was an active participant for 58 years, both as a scout and in leadership roles. She played the trumpet and bugle for the High School band, played field hockey, loved camping, canoeing, and archery, and tailored and knit her own clothing.
While raising her children, Phyllis continued her involvement in Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Marblehead Youth hockey, school sports and theatricals, Marblehead Little Theatre and other activities. She was an avid fan of the Boston Bruins and the Boston Ballet.
Proud of her nursing skills, Phyllis was a registered nurse and worked at the Devereux Nursing Home, became the Director of Nursing, survived the Blizzard of ’78, living at the facility to care for patients for a solid week, and retired in 1992 after 23 years of service. After her retirement, Phyllis decided to see the world, packed her bags and travelled extensively throughout the United States and Europe. She also bought herself a piano and music lesson, a bicycle, and rollerblades. She joined the Essex County Needlework Guild and was an active member for 26 years. An accomplished needlewoman, Phyllis‘ knitting, crocheting, crewel and embroidery, and sewing skills were extraordinary and admired by her fellow guild members.
Phyllis is survived by her children, Lynn Runnells, Lois Tobin, Lori Yarworth and her husband,
Christopher, Richard Tobin and his wife, Candace; her grandchildren, Emily Runnells, Zachary Ehlert, R. Alexander Ehlert, Michael Ehlert, Jillian Tobin, Kathryn Tobin, Kristin Tobin, Duncan Yarworth and Cullen Yarworth; and her great granddaughter, Molly Ehlert-Titus.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, September 16th from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Eustis & Cornell of Marblehead, 142 Elm Street. Interment will be the following day, Tuesday September 17th at 11:00 a.m. at Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead. Relatives and friends are welcome to gather inside the main gate of the cemetery at 294 W.
