Philip F. Norcross, Jr., age 91, of Marblehead, MA, passed away at the Kaplan Family Hospice House Danvers, MA, on Friday, December 22, 2023, after many years of a brutal battle with Parkinson's Disease.
He was born on April 27, 1932, in Salem, MA, to the late Philip F. Norcross, Sr. and Helen (Young) Norcross. Philip was a lifelong resident of Marblehead, MA, which he loved. He was active in the community which included an elected position to the Recreation and Parks Commission where he served for many years and to the Water & Sewer Commission Board. He was one of the founders of the Marblehead Youth Football program and officiated games for more than 30 years. Philip was a 3rd degree Mason in the Marblehead Philanthropic Lodge F. & A.M. from Feb. 1957 to the present.
Mr. Norcross graduated from Marblehead High School in 1950, followed by a year at Kimball Union Academy before entering Middlebury College, Vermont, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1955.
Philip entered active duty with the U.S. Navy and served for two years on the USS Yellowstone AD 27 primarily in the Mediterranean. He continued his Navy career for the next 30 years in the Naval Reserve retiring as a Commander. Upon completing his Navy active duty, Philip pursued his career in the insurance industry and received a CLU degree during this time. Throughout his work career he enjoyed sports and officiated college and high school football in the Eastern College and Athletic Conference for many years.
After leaving the insurance area, Mr. Norcross worked for the U.S. Treasury Dept. as an Enrolled Agent for 18 years. Upon retiring from the U.S. Government, he enjoyed traveling, being involved with the YMCA, and attending town activities.
Mr. Norcross is survived by his long time partner, Mary R. Ferris of Marblehead; daughter, Nancy Norcross of Park City, Utah; son, Derek and daughter-in-law, Joanne (Flaherty) Norcross; and grandchildren, Mitchell, Jennifer, and Richard "Gil" Norcross. He was preceded in death by his parents, Philip F. Norcross, Sr. and Helen (Young) Norcross, a brother, James Norcross, his sister, Carol (Norcross) Williams and her husband, Laurence Williams.
Visiting hours will be held at Eustis & Cornell of Marblehead, 142 Elm Street on Thursday, January 11, 2024 from 3:00 to - 7:00 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 6:30 p.m. His funeral service will be held on Friday, January 12, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home.
