MARBLEHEAD - John “Jay” AM Dow, Jr., age 91, passed away on Monday, October, 21, 2019 after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of the love of his life, Day (Morrill) Dow with whom he just celebrated 68 years of marriage. He was the loving father of William Dow and his wife, Mary (Donovan) Dow of Marblehead and the cherished grandfather of their children, Jack and Grace. He was the loving father of the late John AM Dow, III and his surviving wife, Linda Dow of Brookline; and the uncle and great uncle of many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by several cousins and extended family members.
Jay loved spending time with his family, which was most important to him. He could often be seen with his wife, Day walking all over Marblehead. He also loved being in the company of his first cousin, Jan Johnson.
Jay grew up travelling between Roslindale and Marblehead but was a true Marbleheader. He spent his younger years as a lobsterman with his brother in law, Ben Morrill, building 400 traps and knitting the heads by hand. Jay could build anything. He was very talented craftsmen. If it was broken Jay would go down to his shop in his basement and he could fix it.
Jay served in WWII attending the Army Educational Program in Yokohama, Japan. He was passionate about education and graduated from the Massachusetts Teachers College also earning his Master’s Degree in Education from Boston University. Jay taught Industrial Arts “shop” for 40 years in Marblehead.
Jay served on the MTRS, MA Teachers Retirement System, and was also on the PRIM Board, Pension Reserves Investment Management Board for educators. Jay was also a past President of the MA Teachers Association.
In his retirement Jay kept very active. He continued his love of Marblehead by giving historical tours of the town. He drove the elderly for their appointments from the Marblehead Council on Aging. He was a 65 year member of the Masons also a member of the Gerry 5 Club.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 26th from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at in the Eustis & Cornell Funeral Home, 142 Elm Street, Marblehead followed by a Funeral Service at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead.
