Gertrude "Trudy" (Hall) MacKenzie, 94, of Marblehead, a retired nurse, passed away at her home on August 17, 2023. She was the beloved wife of late Graham "Gray" MacKenzie (d. 2013) with whom she shared 61 years of marriage. Trudy was a beloved friend, sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Born and raised in Marblehead, Trudy was the second daughter and middle child of the late Harold H. Hall Sr. and Hazel Mae (Adams) Hall. In 1946, she graduated from Marblehead High School and enrolled in Salem Hospital School where she became a night nurse for many years until her retirement. In her spare time, she had an active social life, was an avid member of local bowling leagues and member of the Marblehead and Swampscott senior centers. Known for her outgoing and generous spirit, Trudy loved catching up with good friends and hosting regular Bridge and Mahjong clubs in town. Throughout her life, she was a voracious reader, hobby gardener, board game enthusiast, Red Sox fan, and loved to go out to eat. Trudy enjoyed summers up in Maine and attended all the performances, sports games, events, and graduations of her four grandchildren. She woke up early and stayed up late. Trudy never met a puzzle, card game, or board game she couldn't win. She loved - and insisted - upon doing everything herself - even shoveling her own driveway in the blizzard of 2015 (at age 86). She was clever, practical, steadfast, modest, and could whip up a batch of silver dollar pancakes to feed 10 people in 10 minutes. Trudy loved the color blue, Pistachio ice cream from Treadwells (perfect as an early supper), and she would always carry at least one extra sweater in case she or anyone else got cold.
Trudy loved her family and always put everyone first. Her family - including her four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren were so honored to gather together and share in lively conversations with her in her final days. Trudy went as she lived - strong, decided, and at peace.
Trudy was predeceased by her beloved husband, Gray, and her best friend and older sister, Doris Stacey (d. 2016) and her younger brother Harold Hall Jr. She is survived by three daughters: Lynne T. MacKenzie of Barrington, NH, Dawn L. MacKenzie of Marblehead, and Paige A. Dolan and her husband Mark of Scarborough, ME; four grandchildren: Amanda and her husband Parker, Ryan and his wife Jenna, Nicholas, and Brady Dolan; and her four great-grandchildren, Cameron, Cohen, Rylie, and Elliott.
A funeral service will be held at 12pm, noon, ET, Thursday August 24th, at the First Church in Swampscott, Congregational, 40 Monument Avenue. Interment to follow in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead. Relatives and friends respectfully invited - please wear blue in Trudy's honor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Marblehead Council On Aging.
