A longtime resident of Marblehead and product of its schools, Ed excelled at sports. He was among the first inductees into the MHS Football Hall of Fame.
After graduation in 1943, he joined the U.S. Marines, serving his country through the end of the war.
He met and married Virginia Haughey of Swampscott in 1948. Enriched by their love for each, Ed and Ginny experienced and enjoyed life together for more than 70 years until Ginny’s passing in 2020.
Known for his warmth and outgoing nature, Ed earned and treasured the friendship of many. Among his favorite memories were those of times with his friends at Tedesco Country Club. In 2018, the members recognized his nearly 70 years at the club with an honorary membership.
He was father of Greg Barry of Lynn, Joan Whelan and her husband, Tim of Marblehead, Paul Barry and his wife, Leslie of Mt. Pleasant, SC; grandfather of Patrick Barry of Charleston, SC, TJ Whelan and his wife, Elyse of Marblehead; and great grandfather of Emmett J. Whelan of Marblehead.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, May 24, 2022 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Eustis & Cornell of Marblehead, 142 Elm Street. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 25, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, Marblehead, MA. Burial in Waterside Cemetery will be private.
