Joan Harriet Morrow left this earth and entered the full embrace of Jesus just after sunrise on Saturday, August 21, 2010 after a long illness. She was born in Dallas, Texas on July 8, 1939, the third of three daughters of William Stuart Wood and Roberta Parker Wood. She has many life-long friends; many going all the way back to Pleasant Grove Elementary School and the first graduating class of W.W. Samuell High School in 1957. Joan was known as a strict grammarian who had a relentless pursuit of, and insatiable appetite for, learning. Though primarily self-taught, she challenged many scholarly friends and enjoyed discussing current affairs, business, politics and the arts. Her attention to detail was appreciated on the many church committees on which she served through the years and as a member of the board of the Church at Horseshoe Bay where she headed education efforts until she resigned on August 20. Throughout her adult life, she studied the Bible and never tired of learning more about the history and mystery of its pages. As a young adult she discovered a love of reading which led her into writing. She published several inspirational articles and wrote novels in various stages of completion. Joan loved a good party and knew how to make her guests feel comfortable. Her almond cookies and pound cakes are well known and her skill and hospitality will be sorely missed. She will be remembered as one who enjoyed life and encouraged others to do the same, even if it meant joking at her own expense. Her motto was “do something fun every day,” preferably in full makeup and every hair in place!
Her parents, her husband of 48 years, Terry Hugh Morrow, and her nephew Robin Willerford, preceded her in death. She is survived by her sisters Frankie Willerford and Juanita Prather; her sister-in-law Rhoda Tomasco; her three children, Andrea Morrow Edwards, Anthony Travis Morrow and Matthew Blake Morrow, her son-in-law Terry Edwards; her five grandchildren, Hunter Morrow, Jessica Morrow, Michael Morrow, Carter Morrow and Makaela Morrow; former daughter-in-law Jennifer Morrow; nieces Deborah Davis and Karen Saura; nephews Donald Tomasco, Jr. and Kirkland Tomasco, Richard P. Prather, Cynthia Fleming and countless friends, many of whom she considered family.
The family would like to express thanks on her behalf to Dr. Frank Fosella, Dr. William Meyers, and Dr. Noah Taylor and their staffs for their assistance during the last two years. Our gratitude to her church family at the Church at Horseshoe Bay is immense. Their tireless expression of love, compassion and Christian community cannot be overstated.
A tribute celebrating the life of Joan Morrow will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 8, at The Church at Horseshoe Bay, 600 Hi Ridge, P.O. Box 8295, Horseshoe Bay, Texas 78657. Memorials donations can be made there in her honor or to Bethany Christian Church in Dallas, Texas. Or, feel free to send flowers, as she loved them
