Elroy was born in Killeen, TX to Frank Albert Schorn and Clara Louise Vahrenkamp. After graduating from Killeen High School he gained employment as a butcher, married Kay Richerson and had two children. Their family moved to Marble Falls where he worked in the grocery business for Ralph and Richard Giesecke as a butcher. In 1970 he married Rachel Jernigan Gaddy who had one daughter and two sons from a previous marriage. They would have an additional daughter making for a total of six kids, five of which were within 4 years of age. He would progress in the grocery business to store manager and then minority owner working closely with his partner Ritchie Giesecke. He was not only an excellent provider for his rather large family, but the best role model a family could ask for.
Elroy is survived by his wife of 52 years, Rachel Wanda Jernigan. His sister Frances Barr. Six Children: David Schorn, Janice Quirl, Terri McCoy, Gary Gaddy, Glenn Gaddy and Susan Charlton. Eleven Grandchildren: Kris McCoy, Adam McCoy, Erin Schorn, Clay Gaddy, Celeste Gaddy, John Quirl, Kayla Brinkley, Cole Gaddy, Kyra Gaddy, Megan Charlton and Ginger Charlton. Two Great-Grandchildren: Noah and Ethan Gaddy.
Elroy was proud of Marble Falls and very active as well. He was a Charter Member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Junior Member (Jaycees), Volunteer Deputy, Volunteer Firefighter, FFA Volunteer, Member of the Optimist Club, Little League Coach, served on the School Board and on the City Council.
Elroy just LOVED hunting, fishing, and playing cards and dominoes. He would fish with his family after church on Sundays and routinely play penny poker with them, with the loser (most often mom) having to do the dishes…for Eight People!!! He was a brave man, loading six kids into their station wagon, with the bags strapped down on top, and traveling not only to Disney Land in California but also to Disney World in Florida. He loved South Texas, hunting and working with Greg Springer in Encinal. Later in life, every day he could make it, Elroy would play bridge at the Kingsland Senior Center, where he and his close friend Frank Ligon often frustrated their friends.
Elroy was truly a special person, who will be dearly missed by family and friends.
God Bless!!!
