William "Bill" Thomas Herdman

William “Bill” Thomas Herdman passed away on Sunday, April 2, 2023 at OhioHealth of Mansfield, surrounded by his family. His lungs that gave breath to his beautiful bass voice and used to bless so many in church choirs and barbershop quartets were no longer able to provide what he needed at the end of his life.

Bill was born to Nina Mildred Frazier Herdman and John Isaac Herdman on March 6, 1945 in Mount Vernon, Ohio. He graduated from Fredericktown High school in 1963 and attended The Ohio State University. William proudly served in the United States Navy from 1966-1968 on board the USS Stickel stationed out of Newport, Rhode Island.

After completing his military service, he came back to Mansfield where he started working at Empire Detroit Steel Division/AK Steel, eventually working his way up to foreman and assistant general foreman. After retiring in 2004, he worked in the office at Family Life Counseling for several years.

Bill and Jan were married at First Presbyterian Church in Mansfield, Ohio on July 2, 1966. They lovingly raised Rich, Keith, and Emily. While his children attended Mansfield Christian School, Bill volunteered with the radio station and several musical groups. He also served on the Mansfield Christian school board for a term.

Bill was a charter member of the Fun Center Chordsmen since 1975. He was the chapter’s first Secretary and sang in the show’s first quartet, The Fun Center Four. He sang with Broadway Limited for many years and then Home Edition until he was no longer able to sing. He was known as the “basso profundo” and blessed so many with his unbelievable range. In addition, he was recognized in the Johnny Appleseed District as “one of the best”. Bill was also significantly involved in church music, singing in the choir in every church his family attended as well as singing many solos and with small groups over the years.

He had numerous hobbies, including woodworking and photography. From an early age, Bill loved the photography process and eventually captured images of his family’s life, leaving them with treasured memories. He passed that love of capturing stunning images down to his children.

In 1975, he put his trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and faithfully served Him while ministering through music and other ministries at Mansfield Alliance Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Keith.

Bill is survived by his wife, Janet Wallace Herdman; children, Rich (Lisa) Herdman and Emily (David) Stoll; and was a proud grandpa to seven grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by his two sisters, Carma Miller and Sue Beheler; and many nieces and nephews who loved him.

A memorial service will take place on April 22, 2023 at South Park Pavilion at 11:00 am in Mansfield, Ohio. A private burial will take place at Forest Cemetery in Fredericktown, Ohio. Advantage Funeral & Cremation Services by Wappner is honored to serve the family.
