Walt graduated from Madison High School in 1941. He was President of his Senior Class and lettered in football and basketball during his high school career. Walt served in the U.S. Army in Africa, Italy, Anzio Beach and Europe. He was overseas 2 1/2 years with the Third Infantry Division, 7th Regiment. He was awarded several medals and was most proud of his Combat Infantry Badge, Anzio Campaign and Bronze Invasion Arrowhead. He was honorably discharged on December 7, 1945.
Walt married his high school sweetheart, Norma Jean Kimes, on May 18, 1946. They were married nearly 64 years before her passing on April 27, 2010. Walt retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1983. Jean and Walt enjoyed attending his Army reunions throughout the United States. They were ardent boaters, campers, fishermen, and rock hounds.
He is survived by a son, Robert Daniel Henry of Mansfield; one grandson, Shaun Michael (Katherine) Henry of Mansfield; adopted son, Michael T. Mooney of Ashland; and two grandchildren, Lily and Parker of Mansfield.
The family will receive friends from 12:00-1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 30, 2017, at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield. The funeral service conducted by his nephew, Rev. Kenneth Kimes of Lexington Eagle Mount Fellowship Church will immediately follow at 1:00 p.m. He will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife in Mansfield Cemetery with military honors presented by the U.S. Army.
