Verna Rose Ackerman, 105, of Mansfield, passed away Thursday, October 10, 2019 at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital. Born September 15, 1914 in Chicago Junction (Willard), Ohio, she was the daughter of William Ross and Martha Elsie (Mueller) Moore.
She lived in Chicago Junction until the age of 9 moving to New Haven in 2nd grade. She was a 1933 graduate of New Haven High School and following graduation moved to Mansfield.
Verna worked for the Kobackers Department Store and retired from the Mansfield Credit Bureau. She was a member of Mayflower Congregational Church where she sang in the choir and held many jobs throughout the years. She volunteered at the Conard House and the Salvation Army, and enjoyed gardening, reading and cooking and was known for her baking. She was a huge Cleveland Indians fan and loved all animals.
She is survived by her devoted son, Philip Ackerman; her grandchildren, Steven Ackerman and Lisa Coover; her great grandchildren, Adrian, Amber, Tyler (Rebecca), and Ciarah Ackerman, Taylor Cline, Tonya Heft and Lyndsey (Chris) Barnes; 11 great great grandchildren; her nephew, Ronald (Carol) Robinson; her nieces, Paula Mock and Judith Miller; a grandson-in-law, Tom Cline; and her cat, Kitty.
She married Philip E. Ackerman in 1937 and he preceded her in death August 23, 1976. She was also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Patricia Ackerman; a granddaughter, Amy Cline; a great grandson, Thomas "TJ" Cline; a grandson-in-law, David Coover; a sister, Irene (Henry) Robinson; a sister-in-law, Marion (Jack) Martin; and a brother-in-law, Paul (Doretha) Ackerman.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 18, 2019 at Mayflower Congregational Church, 548 N. McElroy Road, conducted by Rev. Dr. Rich Rader. Friends may call one hour prior to the service, from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m., at the church on Friday. Burial will be held at a later date in New Haven Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Mayflower Congregational Church.
