Mr. Markel served in the United States Army during the Korean War for 14 months where he obtained the rank of Sergeant. He owned his own Trucking Company and retired from the County of Ashland in 1996 following many years of service. He was a member of Southview Grace Brethren Church where he served the church in many capacities. He enjoyed riding motorcycles until the age of 86, gardening and spending time with his family especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Iris (Long) Markel; his children, Jeff (Tami) Markel, Sr., Belinda (John) Fulton, Sam (Carolyn) Markel and Ty (Stacey) Markel; his grandchildren, Tayler Markel, Nicole (Donnie) Martin, Jeff Markel, Jr., Matt (Whitney) Baer, Melissa (Troy) Lawhorn, Megan Baer (Jeff Vavra), Chase (Karra) Markel, Kyle (Nicole) Markel and Jenna Markel; and six great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Markel and Richard Markel; and two sisters, Lois Budd and Mildred Carmen.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, August 17, 2020 at Southview Grace Brethren Church, 810 Katherine Avenue, Ashland, Ohio 44805 conducted by Pastor Mark Abel. Burial will follow in Ashland County Memorial Park. Friends may call one hour prior to the service, from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m., Monday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Southview Grace Brethren Church Mission Fund.
