He was a 1965 graduate of Mansfield Senior High School. After graduation, he joined the Army National Guard and then served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Richard enjoyed bowling, puzzles, gardening, computer games, fishing and camping. He was an avid sports fan and closely followed the Cleveland Indians, Browns and Cavaliers. He was a member of Crossroads Community Church and AmVets Post # 26.
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Linda L. (Hammons) Fowler, whom he married on June 11, 1976; children, Troy (Tracy) Holland of Columbus, Kristina (Chris) Christman of Columbus, Jeff Fowler of Shelby, Carrie (Chris) Gimbel of Shelby, Vernon Fowler of Ontario, and Richard Fowler Jr. of Shelby; eleven grandchildren, Kyle Fowler-Mitchell, Kayla Mitchell, Nick Stadelman, Alyssa Cline, Kristi Mitchell, Seth Holland-Christman, Kody Fowler, Taylor Holland, Tanner Holland, Kendra Fowler and Kaylee Gimbel; six great grandchildren; five brothers, Dan (Susie) Fowler of Chesterville, Tom (Karen) Fowler of Butler, John (Deborah) Fowler of Mansfield, Bill (Pam) Jackson of Ashland, and Bob (Colleen) Jackson of Hayesville; three sisters, Sharon Barnhart of Albany, Ida Bowman of Mansfield, and Vida (Russell) Eagle of Jeromesville; several nieces and nephews; and many special friends and neighbors.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Claire Fowler; and mother-in-law, Betty Littleton.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, March 6, 2016, at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield. The funeral service will be held Monday at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home with military honors presented by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. Burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the family to assist with funeral expenses.
