Michael "Mike" Edward Witzky passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 6, 2025, after complications from COVID and pneumonia, at the age of 77. He leaves behind a legacy of dedicated service in mental health advocacy, passionate involvement in youth sports, and a loving family.
Mike loved spending time with his family and grandchildren, cherishing the moments they shared together on Sundays over dinner. He never came empty-handed as he conveniently purchased more quantities than he needed of the latest QVC gadgets to share with the family. But Mike seemed to always forget a wallet or phone on his way out. His sense of humor and playful nature were ever-present – often sneaking wild cards up his sleeves during card games only to be realized when he got up from the table.
Mike dedicated a significant portion of his career to the Union County Mental Health and Recovery Board, where he served with distinction as both Director and Executive Director. His tenure was marked by a deep commitment to ensuring that residents had access to vital mental health services. He was a founding member of Wings Support & Recovery, an organization dedicated to supporting those with mental illness and addiction. He was a kind man who was always concerned about the people he served. His work in this field came from a place of deep personal understanding, as he too faced his own mental health struggles, only realized later in life.
For many years, Mike worked with the Union County Balloon Festival, an event that continued his charitable efforts. He was a proud member of the Lions Club, always ready to lend a hand or share a laugh.
Mike found solace in the arts whether through photography or woodworking. He found great joy in creating with his hands, and in capturing the beauty of the world around him. He was an avid animal lover and had many pets over the years, each one a cherished companion. He was a passionate soccer fan and involved locally as a referee for many years. Mike had a deep passion for cars, always excited about buying new ones and going for drives. He found joy in the simple pleasure of being behind the wheel, often with Car Talk playing on the radio.
Mike is survived by his loving wife, Patricia “Pat” Williams, his children Jon Witzky (Emily Earl); Erin (Doug) Powell; Alex (Jessica) Williams-Witzky; Abra Williams-Witzky (Scott Thomas) and cherished grandchildren Caleb, Ian, Samantha, Finnley and Maxwell. Mike is also survived by many nieces, nephews and other family members who will miss him dearly.
Mike was the son of the late Willis J. Witzky and Norma Ruthe (Alexander) Witzky of Mansfield, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his brother, Stephen Witzky.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Mike’s honor on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at The Bailey located at 4455 Winder Drive in Dublin, Ohio. The family will be receiving guests from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mike’s name to Wings Support & Recovery at 729 S Walnut Street, Marysville, Ohio 43040.
