James M. 'Big Jim' 'Pops' Boyd, 64, of Mansfield died Sunday afternoon, April 7, 2002 at SCCI Hospital following an extended illness. He was born August 19, 1937, in Van Lear, Kentucky to Earl and Myrtle Ward Boyd. Jim worked as a supervisor until his retirement from Conrail and was a veteran of the US Air Force. He was an avid sports fan, coached Little League, softball and won City Championship in softball in the 1960s. He stayed with the games until the 1970s as an umpire.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, June 'Judy' Cates Boyd; son and daughter-in-law, James G. & Nauny Boyd of Mansfield; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Kimberly & Frank Waggoner of Mansfield, Connie & Jim Pagani of Lexington, and Tammy Boyd and her friend, Jack Fry of Mansfield; grandchildren, James E., John T., Daniel F. and Jesse G. Boyd, Shannon Raynard Popa, Richard and Nikki Raynard, Brian, Joseph, and Jenny Waggoner, Jamie L. Pagani, Kevin McCoy, Jamie M. and Rick Homchik, Annette DeLong, Brandy and Chelsea Callahan; great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Terman, Alexandria Raynard, Calvin and Nate Waggoner, Shirelle DeLong, Christian and Matthew Homchik; brothers and sisters-in-law, Mose & Edna Boyd and Guy & Bev Boyd, all of Mansfield; sister, Delores Scott and her friend, John Ashworth of Mansfield; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Earl Boyd, Jr.
Friends may call at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors Wednesday, April 10 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be at the funeral home Thursday at 10:30 a.m. conducted by Pastor Monty Perry. Military graveside services will be held at Lantz Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in care of the family.
