Hanna Martha Schmidt, 89, of Mansfield, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, February 10, 2019, in Washington State while visiting her son. She was born November 14, 1929, in Hanover, Germany, to the late Hermann and Frieda (Rosenbrock) Wienecke.
She grew up near Celle in northern Germany and met the love of her life, Heinz Schmidt. They fell in love and when he moved to the United States in 1952, they continued to write to one another. Hanna came to the US to visit Heinz in 1955, sailing from Germany on the ship "Italia". Once here, she settled into life in Mansfield and was soon engaged to Heinz. They married in 1955 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, and enjoyed 26 years of marriage until his passing in 1982.
Hanna enjoyed raising her family and helping her husband on weekends at his store, Southside Market, in Crestline. She had a great sense of humor and would often get everyone around her laughing. She enjoyed sharing German quotes of wisdom and humor and will be remembered for these gems for a lifetime. An excellent cook, everyone looked forward to her treats and baking Christmas cookies brought a special twinkle to Hanna's eyes.
Never losing her sense of adventure, Hanna enjoyed gardening, dancing, hiking at Hocking Hills and Mohican State Park, visiting Kingwood Center and Clearfork Reservoir and taking road trips. She was an adventurer and relished nature and the beauty of the countryside. She will be fondly remembered for her love of watching game shows and Hallmark Channel movies on television. Reading romance and mystery novels took her to wonderful places in her mind. Jigsaw puzzles, slot machines and eating soft serve ice cream were just a few of her favorite ways to pass the time.
Hanna had a genuine love for all the Schmidt and Grosch families that shared their lives with her. She is survived by three children, Michael (Mary) Schmidt, Monika Schmidt, and Gerald (Sonya) Schmidt; and two grandchildren, Keaton and Christie. Hanna was one of eight children and is survived by her siblings, Emmi Friedrich, Helga Knottek and Adolf Wienecke; as well as her lifelong friends, Frieda and Linda.
The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Monday, February 18, 2019, at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road. Pastor Aaron Grosch will conduct the service which follows at 2:00 p.m. She will be laid to rest in Oak Grove Memorial Park beside her husband.
