When Dr. Curry was a young child, the family moved to Mansfield where his father practiced general medicine. Educated in Mansfield City schools, Dr. Curry graduated from Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, and attended Western Reserve University School of Medicine under the V-12 Navy program, graduating in 1949. While in medical school, he met his first wife Eleanor Myers from Franklin, Pa. After completing his internship, he joined the Army and spent two years in Germany before setting up a general medical practice in Franklin. During his 15 years as a general practitioner, Dr. Curry delivered over 2000 babies, an accomplishment of which he was very proud. Eleanor passed away from lupus in 1959, leaving three children.
Jim married Joyce Andre Curry in 1960 and had two more children. Dr. Curry went to Geisinger Medical Center in 1967, where he completed a residency in radiology; he was delighted to tell people he was the ‘oldest resident’ in the program. In 1971, Dr. Curry and his family moved to his hometown of Mansfield, where he practiced radiology at Mansfield General Hospital for many years.
Dr. Curry’s zest for life found expression in many interests, professional pursuits, enduring friendships, civic, and church activities. He served as President of both the Ohio State Radiological Society and the Eastern Radiological Society, served on the Richland County Foundation, was a proud member of the Korean War Veterans, served his community as a member of Kiwanis, was Commander of the Mansfield Power Squadron, and was an active member of Hermit Club. Dr. Curry loved music: he played violin as a child, supported the Mansfield Symphony, and sang his entire life in many musical productions and with many choirs ~ lastly, with the First Congregational Church choir. In addition, Dr. Curry enjoyed flying, skiing, sailing, golfing, playing bridge, and reading. He was a life-long learner and relished trying new things; for example, when he was 79, he began studying celestial navigation.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years Joyce (Andre) Curry and five children: John (Linda) Curry of Albuquerque, NM, Jane Curry (Keith Berndtson) of Park Ridge, IL, Sue Curry (Dyke Shaffer) of Santa Rosa, CA, David (Sara) Curry of Park Ridge, IL, and Bruce (Lisa) Curry of Dublin, Ohio. He was the proud and loving grandfather of eleven: Jim, Kathryn, Annie, Megan, David, Brian, Jennifer, Allison, Ryan, Sam, and Jack, and the great-grandfather of Gabriel. He is also survived by his sister Jean (Curry) Comegys of Bradenton, FL, his sister-in-law Nancy (Dumbauld) Curry of Lima, OH, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Robert I. Curry, MD.
