Charles E. Beal, Chief Petty Officer, U.S. Navy Retired, passed away Tuesday morning, August 20, 2013 at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital. He was 88. Charles was born October 15, 1924 to Frank and Georgiana (Hunter) Beal in Butler, Ohio.
He graduated from Mansfield Senior High. His military career encompassed three periods of war (World War II, Korea and Vietnam). After retiring from the Navy in 1969, he worked for the United Telephone Company. Charles was a great animal lover, especially his little dog, "Misty". Charles enjoyed long walks in the woods and afternoons of fishing.
He was a life member of the V.F.W.; he was also a member of the AmVets, American Legion, Fleet Reserves and the John Birch Society. Charles was also a contributor to the Ashbrook Center.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys (Smith) Beal, he was the Captain of her ship; three children, Leona Beal, Dean (Maria) Beal and Michael Beal, all of Mansfield; and three grandchildren, Leonarda (Brandon) Greter, Dean Beal II and Deanna Beal, all of Mansfield. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Kenneth, Ray, Clair, Wellington and Frank Beal; and a sister, Birdella Distl.
A funeral service will be held Friday, August 23, 2013 at 1:00 p.m.in the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road. Pastor Timothy Storms will conduct the service. Burial with military honors will follow in Oak Grove Memorial Park. The family will receive friends beginning at 12:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ashbrook Society.
