Barbara was born August 3, 1925, in Ashland, the daughter of Lloyd and Audrey Witmer Hulit. She attended Ashland High School, graduating as valedictorian of the Class of 1943. As a student at Ashland College, she was selected May Queen during her junior year and graduated as salutatorian in 1947.
Barbara married the love of her life, Robert D. Roland, on August 3, 1947. During the early years of their marriage, Barbara stayed home to care for their young daughters. She began substitute teaching and, in 1963, she started teaching at Ashland High School, continuing as an English teacher and Department Head until her retirement in 1986. Following their retirements, Barbara and Bob enjoyed traveling, wintering in Myrtle Beach, and spending time with their grandsons.
Barbara was a lifelong member of Christ United Methodist Church and taught an adult Sunday school class for years. She enjoyed gardening, reading, writing, music and following local sports. Barbara was also a member of Pi Alpha Gamma, Delta Kappa Gamma and Ashland City Retired Teachers. She volunteered for the Blood Bank and the Election Board.
Barbara is survived by her two daughters Anne Dorn and Nancy (Felix) McElroy, both of Sarasota, FL; five grandsons, Bob (Jenny Meanwell) Dorn of Westford, MA, Scott (Carolyn) Dorn of Findlay, OH, Brian (Janel) Dorn of Sarasota, FL, Ted (Salana) McElroy of Philadelphia, PA, and Michael (Susan) McElroy of Albany, NY; one granddaughter, Lia (Dexter) Stallworth of Fishers, IN; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, on December 10, 2005; son-in-law, William Dorn; and brothers, Kenneth, Darl, Frederick and Bob Hulit.
The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 10, 2017, at Christ United Methodist Church, 1140 Claremont Avenue, Ashland, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. She will be laid to rest beside her husband in Ashland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
