Normand A. Martel, 85, of Wells, ME and formerly of Manchester passed away Tuesday evening, September 16, 2014 in Gosnell Memorial Hospice in Scarborough, ME following a lengthy illness. He was born in Manchester on January 9, 1929, the son of the late Anatole and Evelyn (Lefebvre) Martel.
Raised in the Queen City, he was a graduate of Central High School. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He wed the former Margaret Trautner and together they shared 43 years of marriage until her passing in May 1993. Normand moved to Wells, ME shortly after her death and lived with his daughter and her family.
For the majority of his working career, he was employed in the grocery business; starting with Gagnon-Martel Market and later at Grand Union Champagne’s, Bi-Wise Market, Hannaford and Market Basket, until he retired in 1993. He also had been employed as an installer for the former Machinist store.
He will be remembered as an amazing father and grandfather. He enjoyed dancing, traveling, woodworking, boy scouts, and was an avid fan of Notre Dame Football. Mr. Martel was a member of the Baptist Church of North Berwick, Me and a proud member of the Moose Club of N. Berwick.
His companion, Dorothy Linscott of North Berwick passed away in December 2013.
Family members include his daughter, Brenda A. Piecuch and her husband Michael of Wells, ME; his son, Brian N. Martel and his wife, Andrea Burns Martel of Amherst, NH; five grandchildren, Kathryn J. Martel, Sara Ann Martel, Daniel D. Martel, Christopher Piecuch and Margaret M. Piecuch; a sister, Pauline Hudon of South Carolina; two brothers, Robert Martel and Albert Martel, both of Manchester; nieces and nephews.
Calling hours were held Friday from 5 to 7 PM in the McHugh Funeral Home, 283 Hanover St., corner of Beech St. Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery.
