Leo G. Vincent, 90, of Manchester, died February 12, 2016 at the Bedford Hills Center after a brief illness. He was born in Manchester on June 29, 1925 the son of Alphonse and Bella (Hamel) Vincent and was a lifelong resident of the Queen City. He was the youngest of six children and was educated at Ste. Marie School.
He proudly served his country during World War II having enlisted in the US Navy at age 17. He was awarded the American Theatre Medal, the European-African Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Medal and the W.W. II Victory Medal. Following his return to Manchester, he was employed at J.F. McElwain Shoe Factory before becoming the supervisor for Public Building Services and overseeing the maintenance of the schools in Manchester. He also worked as a part-time barber in his own shop and loved horse racing and spending time at Rockingham Park, Suffolk Downs and other local tracks. Leo was a member of the League of 1000 Men of the Precious Blood and was known as the “Miracle Gardener” for the wonderful vegetables that he grew and shared with the sisters at the monastery. He was devoted to his family and will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He was predeceased by his wife of 40 years Theresa Vincent in 1987, by his son William Vincent in 1970 and by his brothers Edward Vincent, Hector Vincent and Adrien Vincent and by his sisters Helen Moquin and Irene Dunont.
Members of his family include his daughter Irene Vincent of Manchester, his grandson Scott Vincent and his wife Debbie and his great-grandsons Connor Vincent and Joshua Vincent all of Chicago, IL as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation was held on Wednesday February 17 from 6 to 8 pm at the McHugh Funeral Home 283 Hanover St. corner of Beech St. in Manchester. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Thursday February 18 at 10 am in Sacred Heart Church 265 South Main St. Manchester. Burial followed in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations in Leo’s name be made to the Sacred Heart Church Food Pantry or to the St. Vincent De Paul Society 177 Wilson St. Manchester, NH 03103.
