Katherine Wessel

Katherine Roberta Wessel, 81, of Londonderry, formerly of Baltimore, MD, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2022. Born on February 24, 1940, she was the daughter of the late John M. McCurley and Katherine Roberta McCurley (Whitney).

Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Katherine was educated through the Baltimore City Public School System and earned her high school diploma at Southern High School. After meeting the love of her life, Donald, they were happily married for 58 years until his passing in 2018. Katherine lived a full life as a devoted wife and loving mother to her two children, Carmen and Alex. She was a longtime parishioner of 60 years at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and expressed her faith in all she did. She held many callings in the congregation, including serving as the President of the Women's Relief Society, spending countless hours teaching others how to be good homemakers. She enjoyed being with her family and friends, and participated in many hobbies, including arts & crafts and gardening. She was especially interested in creating beautiful flower arrangements for church each Sunday, as well as for weddings and other special events at church. She and her husband enjoyed camping and traveling around the US by car, followed in later years by cruises around the world.

In her earlier years, she spent much of her time at Parkville Bowling Lanes and was a member of the bowling league. She was very involved in community efforts and worked diligently as PTA President when her children were in elementary and junior high school. She was actively involved as Troop Leader in the Brownies and Girl Scouts, and Den Mother in the Boy Scout program.

She is survived by her daughter Carmen Zavorotny and husband, Kyle, of Londonderry, New Hampshire; her son Alexander Wessel of Baltimore, Maryland; her grandson, Andrew Zavorotny, and many loving friends. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Donald, brother John McCurley and sister Alice Massey.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that a donation be made on behalf of Katherine’s memory to the American Heart Association.
