Ed was oldest of 6 children, and at a young age, his family moved to Manchester. He graduated from Manchester Central High and in 1948, enlisted in the US Navy. It was while in service to his country during the Korean War that he developed a life-long love of the sea. After being honorably discharged from the Navy in 1952, Ed attended the NH Technical Institute where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked for many years in the field of HVAC, Radio, TV and Appliance Repair. During these years he also earned his certificate from the Westlawn School of Yacht Design and began his hobby of designing and building wooden boats. He remained passionate about this hobby for his entire life.
His career path took a turn when he was hired by the United States Treasury Department, Law Enforcement and Air Security. During these years he traveled the world, flying undercover in his capacity as a US Sky Marshal. When the Sky Marshal program was terminated, he transferred to the US Customs Service, where he served undercover on narcotic surveillance along the Northeastern seacoast. While in this capacity, Ed received several commendations for successful arrests and seizures of illegal drugs and contraband.
After retirement, Ed continued designing and building boats, walking his beloved Golden Retrievers and fishing for stripers on Plum Island. If asked, however, Ed would say that the “best years” of his life were spent being “Grandpa” to his granddaughters Shannon and Alyssa. They were the light of his life, his constant companions during their childhood and the reason he attributed to staying so “young.”
He is survived by his daughter Maryanne Lockwood and her husband Darrell; granddaughters Shannon Regis and her husband Anthony, Alyssa Lockwood; great grandson Tanner Regis; brother Joseph Murphy; sister Judith Machos; and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his wife of 66 years Alyce (Chakas) Murphy; brother Donald Murphy; and sisters Maureen Kolenski and Janice Paquette.
A service with military honors will be held privately for family.
