Syd was preceded in death by his wife Marcia Deitz of 51 years; father Michael Deitz; mother Mary "Mickey" Deitz; brother Carl Deitz; and granddaughter Sara Caprioni.
Syd (Skip to his many friends) was proud of his roots in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. He had the blessing and curse of outliving many of his childhood friends with whom he kept in close contact over his long life. In his early twenties he met his future wife, Marcia, on the beaches of Brooklyn. The couple started their married life residing in Queens, New York, but quickly outgrew the apartment as they added Barbara and Robert to the family. So they loaded up the car and moved to Manalapan -- as in New Jersey. And like new grass, along came Susan. Skip and Marcia became involved in civic and religious organizations as he commuted to New York and northern New Jersey for his job as a salesman for a jewelry manufacturer. His job allowed him to travel many weeks and ultimately earn a Delta life-time million-mile traveler status! More importantly, it showed him the greatness of this country and appreciating the world, so the family traveled often and experienced wonderful trips with friends and family.
As the kids grew older, the family expanded as the kids married and gave them grandchildren; but Marcia grew ill with a slow-developing lung condition. His support and love never wavered as Mom made her decisions over that period. When she passed, he was left alone for the first time in 74 years. Over time, he made new friends, and ultimately had a special relationship with Dolores, his neighbor in his community. They shared meals and entertainment together, and as they both aged, took care of each other.
Syd moved into an assisted living facility in May of this year, but began to struggle with some viruses which led to his dementia accelerating. The family tried to spend time with him as they saw his physical and mental condition changing; yet he remained diligent in connecting regularly with his longtime friends by phone -- his new assistant SIRI was very helpful.
We will miss his love, guidance and support. He taught us many things about loyalty, friendship and family. He was a good man that helped build a great family.
