Lena Mandelbaum, 96, of Monroe Township, New Jersey passed away on Thursday, September 14, 2023 at her home. Born January 17, 1927 in Beuthen, Germany, she resided in Germany. From 1940-1945 Lena was in concentration camps in Poland and Czechoslovakia. When WWII ended she lived in a DP Camp in Landsberg Germany (near Munich) for 5 years, met her husband Joe there, married and moved to Brooklyn NY. They lived there 45 years before retiring and moving to The Ponds in Monroe Township NJ.
She worked for the N.Y. Board of Education as a cafeteria supervisor at PS 242 in East Flatbush Brooklyn .
Lena was predeceased by her husband Joseph, her brothers Morris, Joseph and David Barber, her sister Regina Barber, 2 great grandchildren Stevie and Kayla and son-in-law Alan Krelenstein.
Surviving are her son Syd Mandelbaum and his wife Diane, her daughters Gladys Krelenstein, and Sherry Cammeyer and her husband Russell, 11 grandchildren and their spouses Bari & Jes, Jill & Nathan, Emily & John, Ryan & Brittany, Dylan & Liz, Eva & Misha, Rachel & Bobby, Naomi & Jeff, Nathan, Brett & Chrissy, Marc, Lindsay. 22 great grandchildren Haley, Lior, Henry, Lou, Jack, Shoshannah, Lara, Jessica, Keira, Hunter, Troy, Leo, Jordan, Ryan, Joshua, Elijah, Joseph, Jack, Stella and Charlotte.
Shiva will be observed at Sherry & Russell Cammeyer, 90 Murray Hill Terrace, Marlboro Monday Sept 18-Thursday Sept 21 7-9 , minyan at 7, Mon and Wed 2-4. Shiva will also be observed at Sy & Diane Mandelbaum's Home for further information please call 516-384-6334.
A graveside service for Lena will be held Monday, September 18, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Beth Israel Cemetery, 1075 Woodbridge Dr, Woodbridge, NJ 07095.
