John Chiselko, 83, of Surf City, NJ passed away on Tuesday, March 24, 2020 at Southern Ocean Medical Center, due to complications from the Coronavirus. The son of the late Margaret (Sian) and Joseph Chiselko, he was born in Raritan, NJ on September 5, 1936. John graduated from Somerville High School in 1954, and on June 15, 1957, he married Teresa Suk. Teresa died on May 11, 1980 and John remarried Sara McCartney on March 28, 1992. John lived in Martinsville, NJ from 1962 until 1997 before moving to Surf City.
John was an avid cyclist. He won the prestigious Tour of Somerville bicycle race as a 17 year old high school senior in 1954, the youngest record winner of the Tour. He was also a junior national champion and winner of the best all-around rider in the United States two years running. John graduated from NJIT and was a mechanical engineer and worked for Egan Machinery in Somerville for 28 years. In retirement, he volunteered for Habitat for Humanity in Manahawkin helping to build homes for those in need and he was presented with the Golden Hammer Award for his contributions.
John is preceded in death by his first wife, Teresa Chiselko and son, Gregory Chiselko. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Sara Chiselko of Surf City, NJ; daughter, Laura Surette and husband, Stephen of Martinsville, NJ; son, Mark Chiselko of Kissimmee, FL; stepdaughters, Laurie Kissinger, and Jennifer Martek and husband, Craig of Harrisburg, PA; 4 grandchildren, Kristin, Alexa, Kyle and Kevin; 2 step grandchildren, Tommy and Emily; and 1 great granddaughter, Adella.
A Memorial Service to celebrate John’s life will be held at a later date.
