Joan Ann Bolton (nee Broome), 81 of Cedar Run N.J. peacefully passed away March 13, 2014 with her family at her side. She was born in Pleasantville N.J. and lived there until 1955 when she married Norman Gage Bolton and moved to Mayetta and then Cedar Run.
From 1953 – 1955, Joan worked as a Registered Nurse in the Atlantic City Hospital. Joan was a stay at home mother until 1966 when she became a School Nurse for the Stafford Township School District. Joan worked at Oxycocus School, McKinley School and at the Intermediate School during her 25 year career, retiring in 1991. Joan was honored to receive the Teacher of the Year Award in 1991. Joan was inducted into the Stafford Township School District Hall of Fame for the 2000-2001 Educator Award.
After retiring from nursing, Joan worked at WalMart and then later at Habitat for Humanity.
Joan was active in the community. Joan served as a Girl Scout Leader and worked with the Emergency Food Bank. Joan was a member of the Manahawkin United Methodist Church, Stafford Township Lady Guard-Chapter 22, and the Old Barney Amateur Radio Club.
Joan was predeceased by her husband Norman Gage Bolton (2000), daughter Jeanette (1965), sister Dorothy Price, brother Charles Broome II and sister-in-law Dorothy Broome. Joan is survived by her daughter Elizabeth Ann Schenck, son-in-law Robert Schenck, grandson Joseph (Jif) Fishman, and great-granddaughter Keara Schenck. Joan was loved and will be missed by many other friends and family.
Visitation will be held 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 17 and a service will be held on Tuesday, March 18 at 11:00 a.m. at the Thos L. Shinn Funeral Home, 10 Hillard Drive, Manahawkin NJ. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Cedar Run NJ.
